As I write this, New Years Eve 2020, it looks like we made it to 2021. But we won’t know for sure until we read this in the bulletin Sunday the 3rd of January for sure if we have or not. Jesus could return anytime between now and then you and I won’t care! That will be alright with me for sure. Who knows what 2021 will bring us? All I know is that we better be praying for God’s guidance, and I mean REALLY praying for Him to guide our elected officials in the first week of January. Interesting times we live in isn’t it?
I have been spending a lot of time in Psalms 91. Maybe some of you have been following the daily devotions on my Facebook page and today we just finished up with verse 4. An ancient commentary on some of the Old Testament writings called “The Midrash” claim that Moses wrote Psalms 91. All I know for sure is that it had to be someone who had a special relationship with God and knew about His ability to protect His people.
Here is a short snippet what Spurgeon has written in his commentary about Psalm 91: “In the whole collection there is not a more cheering Psalm, its tone is elevated and sustained throughout, faith is at its best, and speaks nobly. A German physician was wont to speak of it as the best preservative in times of cholera, and in truth, it is a heavenly medicine against plague and pest. He who can live in its spirit will be fearless, even if once again London should become a lazar-house, and the grave be gorged with carcasses.” So, Psalm 91 is a Psalm that can and will give comfort to those of us in trials and testing in our lives.
I wish I had room to paste the whole Psalm here, but I don’t so I will only share a few verses. But I would like you to read and study the whole Psalm.
“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart (Psalms 91:1-4).” Now please, don’t think that God is going to get you out of every predicament that you get into. I mean, look at what the Apostle Paul had to endure because he proclaimed the gospel and I am sure Paul knew this Psalm by heart but he spent so much time in prison and getting stoned and whipped and all of those other trials and troubles. But spiritually, God is all about this! He is our Rock and our Fortress!! He will deliver us…but beware, it just might not be on our terms. Just trust God and He will see you through!
